Why Is Sleep So Important?

Many of us are consistently sleep deprived. On average, children need 8-10 hours of sleep per night and adults need 7-9 hours per night (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2022). However, many of us get less than the recommended amount of sleep on a consistent basis. Why is sleep so important and what are the benefits of getting enough sleep?
